Bessemer, AL – Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-20/59 Claims One Life
Bessemer, AL (September 18, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash on I-20/59 in Bessemer left one man dead early Wednesday morning, September 17. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office and the Bessemer Police Department, the accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes.
Authorities confirmed that 72-year-old Robert Cherry Cox Jr. was the sole occupant of one of the vehicles involved. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Other vehicles were damaged in the crash, though officials have not released details on additional injuries. Crews worked for hours to clear the roadway and investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The Bessemer Police Department is leading the investigation and has not yet confirmed what factors contributed to the fatal crash. Officers are working to reconstruct the events and determine whether speed, driver impairment, or weather conditions played a role.
