Lexington County, SC (May 9, 2025) – A tragic wrong-way collision on Interstate 20 claimed one life and left another person injured early Friday morning, May 9, in Lexington County. , Lexington Co., SC – Wrong-Way Crash on I-20 Leaves One Dead, One HurtAccording to South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway, the incident occurred at approximately 1:58 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-20 near Mile Marker 39 at the US-178 exit, roughly seven miles south of Batesburg. Authorities report that the driver of a 2011 Volkswagen sedan was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when they crashed head-on into a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The truck driver sustained injuries and was promptly transported by EMS to Lexington County Hospital for treatment. The extent of the truck driver’s injuries has not been publicly disclosed at this time. Investigators from the South Carolina Highway Patrol are reviewing the circumstances that led to the wrong-way driving.
