W Monroe, LA – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on I-20 near MP 118
West Monroe, LA (April 8, 2025) – A tragic accident on Monday afternoon, April 7, resulted in the death of a pedestrian on I-20 westbound near milepost 118 in Ouachita Parish. According to Louisiana State Police, 26-year-old Mecca King was driving a 2023 Kia Sorento around 4:00 p.m. when he veered off the right shoulder of Interstate 20 and crashed with 38-year-old Eugenia Bates, a Monroe resident who was walking along the highway. Bates was wearing light-colored clothing and was on the westbound shoulder at the time of the crash.
Emergency medical responders transported Bates to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite their efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries. King, who was properly restrained during the crash, was not injured. During the preliminary investigation, officers noted signs of impairment from King. He was taken into custody and booked into Ouachita Correctional Center, facing charges of vehicular homicide and careless operation. Toxicology samples have been collected and are pending analysis. The Louisiana State Police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
